    Bands like RAtM

Hi, I recently started to get interested in music (I got itunes)and the first band I found that I like was Rage Against the Machine. Now I've tried to branch off of this band to find other bands like it, but I can't find anything. Do you guys know of any bands like RAtM? And don't give me any of those heavy metal bands that just strum their heavy metal guitars in the background and the lead singers try to sound like zombies. I want guitar riffs(I think I used that term right) that actually have a series of notes and are like RAtM's. Oh, and I want somewhat intelligent lyrics(am I being too picky?) Thanks.

Well if you want guitar riffs, RATM isn't the place to be looking!

hmmm you'll have a tough call matching both categories...

as for the style of music you'd probably dig on funk metal like old red hot chili peppers / fishbone / 311 / infectious grooves / suicidal tendencies...

in terms of socio political lyrics you'll probably have to look towards older punk groups like the dead kennedys (when jello biafra was in the band)... black flag... the clash... nomeansno

Well, in terms of riffs, you could always just send him to the default choice: Led Zeppelin 2 :p

You might also want to try Faith No More, Korn, or early Tool...not necessarily "great", but considering that you're starting off with RATM they'd be logical next steps, given their musical similarities....

Led zeppelin springs to mind straight away for me.

Ok, you mentioned a lot of the ones I had found already, but there are some new ones there. And I guess I don't know what riffs are, but what I meant was the heavy guitar in the chorus(did I use that term right?) of Testify and at the beginning of and throughout Bulls on Parade. I heard somewhere that Tom Morello used a special guitar, but whatever it is, I love that sound!

the only thing 'special' about tom morello's guitar is that he's probably the only mainstream rock guy from the 90s who actually used a harmonizer...

and you're using the term riff properly... like a few have mentionned before he 'borrowed' from old led zeppelin a little... just a little

I guess you could always check out Audioslave... they are basically the same guys from RATM with a new singer... but their new singer is from Soundgarden...and is nothing like RATM in terms of singing style/rapping/whatev.... but if you a fan of RATM you might wanna check out what a few of there members have done post-RATM

i'm sorry worm but everything i've heard from audioslave makes me cry inside when i think of the two bands that came before them...

the short version of the story is that everyone from rage against the machine aside from the singer bent over to take it from the machine with audioslave...
