What do you guys think of the white album by the Beatles? best album they made, or do you think it's overlong and ruined by the fact that the Beatles werent getting along at this point?
George Martin said it should have been condensed into 2 sides of Vinyl. What do you think to this - what tracks would you choose?
Hmmm, well of course, it's one of the greatest albums ever. Is it one of the Beatles' greatest though? I don't know. Individually, I love almost all of the songs on the White album, but as an entire album it feels kind of disjointed to me. Of course there are some brilliant sequences -- Long Long Long, Sexy Sadie and Helter Skelter somehow form this awesome trio of songs, IMVHO. (I can't really justify that one rationally, and I can't even remember if that's the right order of the songs!)
It's also nice to see George getting more representation -- I think most of his songs on this album are pretty strong (and have that trademark George humour -- "Piggies" is a scream).
Of course, my favorite Beatles album is Rubber Soul, so I know I'm kind of in a weirdo minority anyway when it comes to the Beatles. I tend to prefer their earlier work because it just feels more "raw" to me, but of course, that's no insult to their later material, which is also brilliant.
Actually, if I may further babble about this topic...
Those are exactly my problems with the White Album. While the songs themselves are very good, you can also tell that they've started to separate into "John songs" and "Paul songs" and "George songs" (and "Ringo song" :D). It's like you can musically hear the Beatles breaking up, and I have to say, that kind of depresses me.Quote:

That may also be why Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles album; they've started to progress into more complex songwriting, but they haven't yet begun to feud with each other or go their own musical ways. As weird as it sounds, I think RS captures them at a very fleeting, pristine moment in their career.
Of course, it can't be repeated enough that all their albums are really good and saying one is better than the others is in no way a denigration of other albums.

Good but completely overrated in every way an album can be
by this time, the beatles are no longer fun, and with the exception of helter skelter, they ahve totally forsaken their merseybeat garage pop for this bloated, pretentious faux-eclecticism, which some people seem to find so endearing and 'brilliant.' frankly, this record is not very much fun, and doesnt hold a candle to earlier LP's such as "meet the beatles" and "rubber soul" or even "revolver" which i dont like too much either.
so basically i would say yes, it goes too long and is really overrated. after revolver, anything the beatles slapped their name on became recognized as 'genius' so somehow everyone things this record amazing.
It's alright I suppose, I have never been a huge Beatles fan. It has some good tracks though, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, Revolution, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
I like it. I don't know why, it's just a fun mess.
Its got some great stuff, i think, like Helter Skelter and Long Long Long, but things like wild honey pie and Dont Pass Me By are shite.
I really like that album, even though I only discovered it recently it feels like a masterpiece. There's elements of experimentalism (helter skelter), and there's some old style beatles charm on there too with while my guitar gently weeps.
