Who are the best current Metal band?

I really can't think of any bands who are at this time, as good as the likes of Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura and Fear Factory in their respective primes.

The best metal album I've heard lately was easily Down II, but that was more of a side project than a regular band.

All the bands that get hyped tend to be at best average. I got Soil's 'Scars' after liking Halo and reading lot's of positive stuff about them, but IMO they sound no better than the avergae hard rock band.

I'm not that au fait with some of the more underground stuff, so I may just be missing out.

So who would you say are the best metal band of the moment?

you might want to look into meshuggah... i've only got one album but it's right up there with fear factory's demanufacture...

I agree. Try Meshuggah. You won't find just a very powerful metal band like those you mentioned (Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura), but also INNOVATION. I think no other hard metal band has ever teased so naturally with their metrics, rithms and riffs. I listen to them and I find lots of influence, both power and technical (on one side Pantera, on the other Dream Theater).

MESHUGGAH....a real headache :)

HIGH ON FIRE. They absolutely crush everything else I've heard lately.

I saw Meshuggah when they were opening for Tool, in my opinion it wasn't all that special, but the crowd seemed to enjoy them and didn't boo the opening act for once, which is good.

just ask any guy trying to play a tablature from a Meshuggah song...he'll say, "damn, that was hard" or something along the lines of that...

Alright, just because apparently guitarists have a hard time playing Meshuggah songs, that means they are incredible?

Nobody said that. All it means is that they don't play shitty riffs that anyone could do. They have a bit of talent to be able to play like that.

Thanks all. As it happens I also like Mudvayne and my brother was pleasantly surprised by their album (LD50) too. So there's at least three of us.

I've now heard some Meshuggah. Musically they were quite impressive. I was a little disappointed by the vocals though, especially on the first listen, as the intro got me quite interested. I'll be listening to more though and may buy an album as they definitely seem to have what it takes musically.

Anyway, where metals concerned, it tends to be more about the guitar than the singing and lets face it, Charlotte Church wouldn't exactly work.
