Anyone into Indian classical music? I'm trying.
I like this website the best so far...very generous with the audio samples. I'm going through the Raga Multani page right now.

Its absolutely amazing as ive spent two yrs of my life into it.But dont know how many in here can develop taste for it.
I just looked up Ali Akbar Khan. Found some sound samples from the album Journey (not to be confused with Arthur Brown!).
Despite my complete ignorance in this area...this record sounds VERY westernized to me...a lot of familiar harmonic progressions. From the little I've learned so far, I don't think Indian Classical Music is supposed to have any harmonic accompaniment underneath the modes, (ragas, melodies...whatever you want to call them).
I guess there's a lot of this "western influence" going on. It may still be good music and everything. Nevertheless, I'm only interested in its untainted form for now.

Correect..Indian Music has become too much westernized offlate.But im sure u can still find some typical Indian classical content very easily.

I agree with you, Ali Akbar Khan is one of the more 'Westernised' Indian Classical Performers. I've heard Ali Akbar Khan's Morning & Evening Ragas (from 1966), it is a pleasent album, but I know of more original and more authentic indian classical music than Ali Akbar Khan.Quote:

Pandit Pran Nath had a great effect on many Western perfromers, however he always kept true to his music, never watering down at all.
He was the 'guru' of many of the key composers of the 2nd half of the 20th Century, composers that included LaMonte Young and Terry Riley. Pandit Pran Nath also tutored several important jazz musicians including Don Cherry and Lee Konitz.
Out of all the Indian Vocalists I have heard, Pandit has the most pure voice of any of them.
Sadly most of his albums are out of print, and the only recording that is available commercially, is one 11 minute track which he recorded with the Kronos Quartet on the Kronos Quartet's 'Short Stories'.
Pandit Pran Nath was the first Indian musician that had a profound impact on me. He has the most amazing voice I have ever heard, and everyone should at least listen to the piece on Kronos Quartet's Short Stories.

I also like Ustad Bary Fateh Ali Khan. Another wonderful vocalist, this time from Pakistan (for which the music is very similar to India's Northen Classical Music style).

My favourite femal vocalist from India is probably Lakshmi Shankar.
She released a beautiful album on the French record label Ocara called 'Les heures et les saisons' or in English 'Season and Time'.

So far I have only recommended traditional Indian vocalists, so I shall know concentrate on some of my favourite Indian instrumentalists.

I think Ravi deserves his spotlight, he is indeed a fine Sitar player.
I have an old LP of his called 'The Sounds of India' (it has been reissued to CD, and is budget priced at $9.99 amazon.com)
The most interesting thing about this particular LP, is that Ravi makes a long introduction at the beginning of each Raga, as well as a brief overview of the 'Raga' as the opening track. It is very interesting to hear Ravi talk about what a Raga is, and the album can be seen as a useful educational tool. It is a fascinating release, and the liner notes give further explantation of the art of the Raga.

The Sitar perhaps has been the most popular Indian for Westerners, evident through various rock bands like the Beatles and The Rolling Stones using it. There are a number of other traditional instruments that deserve as much respect.
These instruments include the Sarod and the Sarangi.
One of my very favourite Instrumental Indian Classical Music is from the master of the Sarangi Ram Narayan.

The Sarangi, is an instrument that closely resembles the sound of indian classical vocalists. It almost sounds like a violin, but it has greater width (much like a fiddle). The improvisational technique of the Sarangi is also very similar to vocal improvisation. SO much so that often the Sarangi almost sounds like a voice, or at least a Theremin being played like a Piano.
The French label Ocara released a beautiful album of Ram Narayan's Sarangi playing under the titled 'L'Art du sarangi/ The Art of The Sarangi'. This is one of my favourite Indian Classical records, and if you see it I highly recommend picking it up.

Geoff: I just recently received a mix tape from a friend which had a song featuring Lakshmi Shankar singing "One, two, three baby" in a duet. Excellence! It cracks me up, but totally addictive.

I bought a cool Bollywood Compilation yesterday.
Featuring the music of Mohammad Rafi.
It is actually pretty cool.
Yep, I was obsessed with that gem of a reel in Ghostworld with the Rafi song. You can't even imagine how often I try to imitate that girl when I dance. There is no other way to dance, in my opinion (except maybe like James Brown ha.)
I havn't seen Ghostworld yet.
It's not the best film. But the soundtrack is fun. Also features Skip James, so that made me happy (as happy as Skip James might make somebody).
All of this is awesome guys. Breath of fresh air! I guess Indian Classical music HAS been missing from my life. Say Geoff, can you recommend any recordings of Pandit Pran Nath/s?
Pandit Pran Nath's 'India's Master Vocalist' is a great album.
So is 'Midnight / Raga Malkauns'.

Apparently they don't have their own site. I'm familiar with them through there radio promotional service. They release about 12--18 discs a year. You can find their releases on Amazon, and so forth.
I only skimmed the thread. There are two styles of classical Indian music the Hindustani, which is prominent in the north, and the Carnatic (also called Karnatik) from the South.
Which one are you interested in or does it even matter?

I still own my mother's Sitar imported from India. But I don't play it anymore.
