My first CD was Oasis - Be Here Now as a thirteen year old.
But when I heard The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony, that's when music won my heart.

I'm still heavily into 'Britpop' today.

In the summer of 1967 my older brother brought in Hendrix's Are You Experienced? LP. I was 10 years old at the time. For all practical purposes, that was the beginning of my becoming the kind of music listener I am as an adult. But really, I think I took music very seriously from virtually my infancy onwards. I started playing chords on the piano when I was a very small child, so I was musically inclined pretty much from the start.

easy!
when i was about twelve, a 1970 elvis presley concert film called 'that's the way it is' came on television, and somehow i ended up watching it.
maybe i came a couple of decades too late or something, but it was a fascinating revelation. i promptly stocked my house up with various elvis compilations and embarassed myself by trying to gyrate my hips every now and then.
then elvis led to chuck berry and little richard.
and then i discovered the beatles. (though i'd heard them all my life).
...and then there was light!

It was the British Invasion in the mid-sixties. I had a little radio and I would listen in the dark late at night when I was suppose to be asleep. No music has ever sounded quite as magical as what came out of that cheap little box.

That's one of my favourite soundtracks ever. It's the entire reason I got into the Pixies.

The movie's not that bad, either. It has one really unintentionally funny moment (a young Seth Green with a mullet and one of those scraggly moustaches 16 year-old guys grow to feel manly)...

The Pixies and Sonic Youth were my first alt-rock purchases because of that soundtrack, and to this day they remain two of my favorite bands. That soundtrack also got me into Bad Brains, Cowboy Junkies and Soundgarden, and really helped open my mind to a different kind of music.

You know they reissued That's The Way it is about two years ago. They cut out all the non Elvis material and added in more Elvis.

I was 16, and im 17 now! I had been into Blur and the odd song off the tv since about age 13 and i had started playing guitar, but quit. So age 16 i wasnt really into music, but had a growing interest in politics. Someone copied RATM's Battle of Los Angeles for me, and i was a dawning. I got copies of all RATM's albums, and loved them all. This was awesome because i started playing RATM on guitar too, and probably learnt more in two months than two years. A friend called Elishia lent me what must of been a fair chunk of her CD collection in parts for about 6 months, and i copied them all.

Along the line a mere year, and i cant think what i did before music. I buy alot of CDs now, and play guitar every day (and am alot better for it). I have all of RATM's CDs non-copied, and i developed a taste for Ska, and Roots Reggae now as well. Quite a story! and i hadnt even thought about it till now!

18 years ago when I was 6.

We had a tape in the car with Gary Numan, those weird sounds got me hooked.
