I really like Dave Matthews, and his lyrics are improving as time goes by (his solo studio work "Some Devil" has some truly magnificent lyrics), but sometimes his lyrics are just embarrasing. Things like "Crash Into Me" are just really stupid, I think, and he has quite a few of those moments on his band's albums.

I really like a lot of Ben Folds' lyrics (he had a band for the first few albums, anyway). But to me, most of the best lyrics are being written by singer-songwriters. People like David Wilcox, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn, Sting...people who think about words with as much care and love as they think about music. They're the ones I listen to when I want lyrics that matter.

Of all the bands I listen to, Phish is the band that most impresses me lyrically...and yet, their lyrics are impressive because they're so just plain off-the-wall, odd, and often goofy. But they often make me smile, and there's something to be said for that, I guess.

I agree with Ben Folds. This guy writes songs that I want to listen to carefully. His lyrics are outstanding.
