Let's hear it for Can
I've noticed quite a few people mention Can offhandedly in their posts, so I think they should get their own thread discussing them. These guys were starting the Kraut movement before even Kraftwerk - and they did it much better I think. I think their music is a study in insanity as that seems to be the unmentioned theme in most of their songs. The mumbled, often unintelligible vocals and dissodent but not too chaotic backing music is something to behold. Anyone else wanna give up some respect for these guys?

I'll give them some repect. All their albums are good but Future Days is incredible. These guys where one of the best in their genre as well as one of the best of the 70's. Can are great.

Glad you like them too FH, but it looks to me like some in this forum need to do some Can-checking-out.

Can were great. The Damo era is my favorite. And hell, if Damo comes by yr neighborhood on his never ending tour i suggest checking it out.
If you like Can, you should check out Amon Duul II. They were just before Can, and depending who you listen to were extremely essential to the becoming of Can, as well as krautrock in general. Just note the "II" there...
Also, I think it can be said that it's hard to say this band or that band was a better krautrock band or whatever cuz honestly, i think all of the bands within the movement were pretty diverse. And yeah, one very important thing to them was incorporating electronics into their jams and what not... Some bands, like Kraftwerk for example, or morely Cluster, Kluster, Harmonia or like Tangerine Dream, pushed it to one side, while you had the Amon Duuls, Can, Faust, Neu, Ash Ra Tempel, bands that tended more on pshysical instrumentation, but electronics were in there too. For what its worth, I think all these bands were totally different and its hard to say who was doing it better cuz they were all kinda doing their own thing. That;s what i find most appealing about krautrock.

I love the Can that I've heard, unfortunately all I own is Tago Mago -- need to get going and buy some more.

Unfortunately, I've never heard any Can. I know I've missed something good there. At some point, I must correct that...

That said, we need a thread devoted to all the great Krautrock bands: Faust, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul II, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluter, etc, etc, etc...

I totally agree with you, I'd really like a place to discuss Kraut. I love Can, Amon Duul II, and Ash Ra Tempel, and would like to find out more about other Kraut groups. By the way does anyone know where someone like Klaus Schulze would fit? Is his music considered Krautrock or what?

I have a few records of his and yes, it would be considered electronic Krautrock -- especially when you consider that he has been a member of of Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel at various points...

So speaking of Schulze, I have actually been wanting to get something of his solo, but what I've seen has been crazily priced, see "Moondawn". So anyways, which would you say would be best to get first maybe, "Irrlicht" or "Moondawn". Thanks.
