Oh, but that's how you make bad songs...but maybe good or bad doesn't matter to vierstein, perhaps just any song is fine.

All these posts are about lyric writing but songs include music too. To write songs I either experiment with chord sequences, fiddle about with scales, or as Johnny Marr did, give myself agendas..
The Smiths song The Headmaster Ritual came about when Johnny Marr gave himself the bizarre agenda to create a chord sequence ' like Joni Mitchell had she been a MC5 fan or a punk rocker '. This is the type of things I do sometimes.
As for lyrics, try findinf famous qoutes and paraphrasing them or twisting their meaning.

yeah, you're right abou that. When I was in a band, we first made music, and then I sung something like la la la la shoo bi doo....and later on I wrote lyrics.
