Depndsdependsdepends. If it's just yourself you want to record, you'll need a decent quality microhpone and soundcard. A decent mic will cost $100 upwards, but shop around, and ask the 'sperts at your local hi fi shop. For soundcards, anything with a mic in port will do, but I'd recomend the Soundblaster Audigy, you can pick them up pretty cheap these days. Put simply, the microphone goes into the mic in of your soundcard, then all you pretty much have to do is use a program such as Cool Edit Pro to record.
To transfer your pro recordings to computer, pretty much the same principle applys, accept it goes into the line in of your computer.

oo kool... but do you have to buy a special cable for the mic to go in the mic in in your soundcard? cuz from what i see... a XLR cable wont fit in a mic in port.

you just need a standard xlr to 1/4' stereo jack, looks like what you get on the end of earbuds. the industry standard mic for vocals is the shure sm 58, u'll see it everywhere, and it's really worth it.
be aware that if your puttin a mic straight into your soundcard, it may produce a fairly low level signal, as vocal mics tend to be low impedance, i found this on the shure website....

hope that helps!

actually, that jack looks a little big, but you can buy adapters to make it smaller. it'll prob be the 1/8' stereo jack, not the 1/4'.

3.5mm jack is what you're after. Thats the smaller version. 5.5mm is the big daddy in that pic.

I have another question though. If you want to connect a condenser mic to the computer, is that possible since a condenser mic uses phantom power? Or can i only use dynamic mics to connect to the computer...
