I think that "the boundaries of sound" have almost been exhausted (this doesn't mean anything is any less impressive), but the places we will see the most innovation will be in the way music will be made, and heard...and experienced.
Surround sound, neural interfaces, touch screens, raw computer horsepower and other things in combination with an intuitive mind could make the next five to ten years pretty interesting...

Also, the reduced cost of computers/software is a plus in my mind. Imagine if Mozart's brain was in an Ethiopian child, all he'd have is a drum or something, and a genius would be wasted (stupid example, but you get my drift)

Now you're talking smack, and I like it. So, we started with our 25 card set, but suddenly someone breaks out a backgammon board. In the far(near) future, it is plausible that through germ-line gene-therapy we will be able to restructure the sensory apparatus and delve into richer and more complex aural landscapes. Prior to actually hardwiring our brains we can supplant this process with drugs. However, there are still problems. We've realized the potential for drugs to influence the nature of sound... psychedelia is so ingrained in our musical appreciation that its nearly inseparable from Idm, or the majority of modern musical forms. This provides a break between steps in the evolution of the genre... somewhere between now and effective somatic gene-therapy something is going to happen. It could be marvelous or it could be boring.

Another thing that concerns me is the possibility of full-scale co-option of Idm by the media. Its completely logical to assume this would happen. After all, future generations will only revel more in the technological age. What better tool could there be to market advanced products then 'crazy computer music'. This could be either disasterous or it could be disasterous. Disasterous in the sense that upon co-option the genre gets completely bastardized and watered down (I fear that even BOC would be too 'hard-edged' - maybe Isan would pass). Or disasterous in the sense that the dead horse would be given just enough juice to pull through but would then become a commercial enterprise.

Things are bleak unless we move quicklier with transhumanism, and gene-meddling. I personally dont want either. 10 years from now I'll break out my copy of Geogaddi, standing on top of a mountain pass, and proceed to bug out. Idm might not have staying power, but for me its timeless.

actually, I asked Haakon to merge them back because:

1) i realized my hatred for the actual acronym "IDM"
2) everytime that a subfora branches off, guess what, everything slows DOWN!
3) in regards to number 2, why should I have to man 2 places if I shouldn't really have to

most people hate genres around here anyway, so let's just have an overall "electronic" section like we have in the past. Seemed like it worked better anyway.

now youre just being silly.
mass media? like when you hear moby on car commercials? Even if you did have some "hip" risk taking moguls...would they really bother getting that far into a sub-genre? an advertising firm's idea of "crazy computer music" is like...I dont know...TATU or something.

dont worry about your precious Gimmik...no one is going to touch him.

(and while we are speaking of Martins...Keef maybe the matmos isnt the best example with pseudotrop...[?even heard a chance to cut yet?])
