One of the best concerts I ever attended

Years ago (1978-ish), on the recommendation of my jazz history professor, I made a last minute decision to drive through a downpour to Yale University's Woolsey Hall and catch Keith Jarrett. This was the first jazz concert I ever attended. I got more than my moneys' worth - I got blown away! Not by volume or showmanship but by intense subtlety and telepathic communication. This prog rocker was taken to school on the power of acoustic soundscapes and open hearts.

Woolsey Hall is an acoustic gem. You can hear a pin drop at 100'. Not one piece of electronic gear was on stage. Jarrett was there with a classic ECM 4tet - Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielson and Jon Christensen. Nobody was allowed to move to or from their seats while the band played. The audience focused on the music and the band drew us deep inside. We were breathing as one. It sounds corny but I mean it! The evening was an emotional roller coaster tour de force. Suddenly, jazz was more than just text book descriptions to me. I was hooked on jazz and Jarrett.

This group can be heard, in a live setting, from that period, on Jarrett's 'Nude Ants' disc.

I have seen Keith Jarrett live several times and never has it been less than excellent.

My favorite would be The K?Concert. Like all his solo recordings completely improvised as he played! Though in this case its really beyond words.

My favorite of the the Standard Trio recordings is Bye Bye Blackbird, which was in remembrance to Miles Davis who had died 13 days earlier. All three members of the trio had been members of Miles band at one time.

Favorite of the European Quartet - Belonging

Favorite American Quartet - The Survivor's Suite

Favorite box set - at the Blue Note:The Complete Recordings

Favorite solo recording beside Koln is Solo Concerts: Bremen and Lausanne.

Of the latest recordings since Jarrett's return from his illness is Whisper Not, followed by Up for It.
