P.P.S. The Simpsons' Bleeding Gums Murphy shown playing sax on the bridge at night was a homage to Newk.

Alright, I'd like to pick up some Sidney Bechet and/or Bix Beiderbecke, I searched the forum but nothing really came up except the "Suggestions" and "What are you listening to right now?" threads, which I don't really want to wade through. Let loose with all you want (the Satchmo signal is up ), but do me a favor and give me one solid cd (or box set, series, whatever, I don't care) that I can start with. Thanks in advance.

With Bix, you have two options. The series of of sets called Bix Restored, which has been released by Orgin Jazz. They are reissuing the 20lp set, which was released by Sunbeam Records. They are just about to release their 5th Volume, which would bring it to 13cds worth of Bix.

However, that would also include the material with Paul Whiteman in the later sets. For that material, you're going to have to be a true Bixophile. Because you're going to have to sit through a lot of crapy music, to only hear a chorus or so of Bix in many of the later playing.

In this option, I would suggest the first two volumes, at first.

The other option is Mosaic Records

This has his best recordings with Frank Trumbauer. It's the same material, as on some of the Orgin Jazz set. You also get Trumbauer's recording with Jack & Charlie Teagarden.

You can also listen to WKCR's 2003 Birthday Tribute to Bix. As well as the Satchmo and Ornette Coleman 2003 tributes. They have them every year.

Here is the list of their yearly birthday tribute lists.

Long ago it became tradition at WKCR to play 24 hours of a jazz great's music on his/her birthday.

Also, on the Beiderbecke, is there any overlap between the OKeh/Bruswick set and the Bix Restored series?

Yeah, I know. Just busy and distracted. Also, in Bechet's case there are several out of print, which I have to figure out what can be of replacement for them. Most likely, the Classics Label material.

Anonymous tip for those who have ordered the Miles Davis - Complete Cellar Door Sessions from CD Universe, and may or may not be confused by the delay, and new "indefinite" release date:

The new release date is October 25, 2005. Don't cancel the order, especially if you got it at the low price.
