allmusic is definitely a good place to start with jazz, or anything for that matter. i started listening to jazz about 2 years ago, i just decided one weekend that i wanted to get into it, so i researched a bunch of people that looked appealing on allmusic and downloaded songs by those artists. i think i started with eric dolphy and ornette coleman

jazz suggestions

I would like to get into more jazz. I really like free jazz, and the experimentation of Be-bop. I also am a big fan of stand up bass, I am also a drummer, so any great jazz drummer would be cool. But my favorite jazz musician/composer/sideman/etc. would have to be Charlie Mingus.. so if anyone has any suggestions, that would be great!

how informative. perhaps I will just have to stick to my metalhead ways, and forget every type of musical genre and style with some class. I will definately have to throw out my atlantic recordings on vinyl.

we don't mean it in a bad way, but just look at the sicky thread. I think it's great for people to get into jazz. Just browse around the forum. You'll find what you're looking for

anyway, I'm gonna merge this thread with the suggestion thread, you'll find it

Don't throw those records away...save 'em for trap shooting.

We've been directing the noobies to the older threads that we all worked so hard on.

People always get all bent out of shape about it. I guess everyone thinks they're special. I don't know.

I'm glad you're finally catching up, but there's SO MUCH information already posted...check out the old threads, then we'll be happy to fill in the holes. I'll try to find the good stuff for you.

Every time a new person joins it's always the same 2-3 people who have to educate him, so try to see it from our perspective. RM can be a very informative place, but you have to deal with our bullshit. I've been directed to old threads...no big deal, really.
