As much as I want to click on those links and look at some vibrators, I'm on the uni computers and I don't want anyone to find dildo's on my web history!

thanks for the e-bow link!

I am so bad!

anyway, I hope the ebow link to the uk distributors still valid. good luck, and come back and let me know what you find out.

Being a bit strange as I am, I allways like to try out things with instruments to see what noise they make. Here's a few things NOT to try:

1. Putting a capo on a bass. I tried it, there's no point.
2. Using a slide on a bass. It sounds like a that buzzing noise you get when you don't press on a fret enough.
3. Using a harmonica as a slide. Although a shotglass works really well, harmonica's don't.
4. Whatever you do, don't put an acoustic guitar in front of a bass amp on full volume. The strings eventually snap temselves.
5. Don't play harmonica, sing or anything threw a microphone plugged into an effects pedal.
6. Amps and microsoft sound recorder DO NOT go together well.

This is completely off topic, and I'm probably being a horrible mod for doing so, but I just felt like responding to this sub-topic as a humor piece.

Have you seen these, Evil? I'm sure you'd find them pretty hillarious...

...It's called "Purring Kitty"...it's an add-on feature to cellular telephones...I'll let you figure out the rest...

Back on topic, I should also mention The Tiger Lillies for their accordian-based Avant-Pop...their music is definately what I would describe as "Avant-Garde" in the Rock/Pop realm...if you're not listening, you should be.

Odd instrumentation?

Check out some of Art Ensemble of Chicago's free jazz records. They use a lot of standard jazz instrumentation, but they include a lot of really weird instruments not normally found in a musical context. Here's a listing of what some of them play

Lester Bowie
(through '99)
trumpet, flugelhorn, steer horn, kelp horn, siren, bass whistle,
celeste, cymbal rack, bass drum, gongs, percussion,
vocals

Malachi Favors Maghostut
(through '03)
bass, electric bass, banjo, sitar, zither, horns, kazoo, bird calls, kongoma,
whistle, melodica, gongs, cans, log drum, ballophone, bass pan drums, percussion,
vocals

Joseph Jarman
(through '93, from '03 on)
sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass saxes
soprano, alto, bass clarinets,
oboe, bassoon, piccolo, Eb flute,C flute, alto flute,
piano, harpsichord, celeste, synthesizer, accordian, marimba, bass pan drums, vibes, guitar,
siren, whistle, bike horn, conch shell, bells, gongs, bell rack, dinner chimes,
tom-toms, congas, woodblocks, ballophone, drums, percussion,
vocals

Roscoe Mitchell
sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass saxes
clarinet, piccolo, flute, bamboo flute, bulb horns, gourd, harmonica, recorder,
guitar, steel drum, pans, bongos, congas, gongs, tambourine, angklung,
cowbells, darabukkas, chimes, woodblocks, drums, percussion,
vocals

Famoudou Don Moye
(from "Chi-Congo" on)
"Sun Percussion"
trap drums
bendir, djimbe, djun-djun, donno, chekere, bird calls, African drums,
whistles, horns, long horn, conch shell, chimes, bikehorns, gongs, tops, kongoma
ballophone, bass marimba, bass pan drums, wood blocks, cow bells, temple blocks, tablas,
cans, claves, bells, triangles, bongos, congas, tympani, maracas, brake drums, cymbals,
vocals

Also, it's just awesome. Full of energy and amazingly well done.

try "Fanfare for the Warriors". The instrumentation on it isn't really visibly THAT strange, but it's a great album.

Here's someone to add to the list: Ben Neill, inventer of the "mutantrumpet", a brass instrument with three separate bells on it...I haven't heard it myself, but it sounds interesting!
