Richard Bona

What do you gus think of bass player Richard Bona? and how you find him with Pat Metheny Group or any of his contributions?
i once saw him play funk on BET on jazz but all his solo CDs now could fled under world music (though they are great).

Any notes.

Thanks Ammaro

Hey, While I was still in the states I was a huge Richard Bona fan. Got a ticket to his first album release party, went to his place, met his son, played on his Fodera bas... I could go on forever. That first cd is incredible. His PR lady was talking about how much of a bummer that he was put under world music. He would sing in his native language and people didn't know what to do about it. A real talented guy. Haven't heard him with Metheny, but I don't really like Metheny since he went into this Cafe Del Mar stuff...

Thats great to hear Avian. I love RB work. Do you know any of his funk work? please guide.

But talking about metheny infront of me is hurting

I think you really need to check his Speaking of now CD PMG featuring Bona.

Cheers

Since I left New York I fell out of the Jazz scene pretty fast, so I'm not entirely up-to-date with everything. "Scenes from my life" is an amazing cd, but a lot more afro-cuban than the stuff he's done since. He does a bit of fusion stuff here and there that might be something that interests you. A good one on "Reverence" is Mbanga Kumba. You might want to poke around some Joe Zawinul stuff as well. I'm not as much into his funk side as his melodic stuff, but I can suggest that anybody who can get their hands on a Bona live recording, do so as soon as possible. I heard him play alone, sitting on a stool with his bass. Really great stuff.
