with that price range i'd say that you're probably looking at a 20-40watt solid state amp if you want new gear... if you'll settle for a pawn shop amp or use ebay you might be able to score a nice peavey or marshall for that price... you won't be getting a stack (or a half stack) but you can probably get something with a nice 10-12 inch speaker and decent sound...

personally i have a marshall valvestate 40 for my guitar (no bass amp though)... it cost me $500 canadian (new)... but they don't make the 40 watt model anymore (i've seen it in pawn shops for around $300)... you can get a 30 or 50 though... it was a great practice amp and performed VERY nicely the few times i used it in talent shows while i was in college... mind you it's not perfect... it konked out on me twice... in the 5 years i used it... it's been waiting for its 2nd repair job for the last two years... mind you i also moved it quite a bit from one location to the other through some rather extreme temperatures...

Consider the PANASONIC SA-XR45. This is a $300 reciever with all digital amps; I know of a very experienced audiophool that's selling a $5,000 tube-hybrid amp and preamp combo and replacing it with the Panny!

I doubt anything better exists at five times the price. Look for one at Best Buy or Circuit City.
