up stroking
Hi, umm I guess im an intermediate guitarist but I seem to have a problem, on fast songs by sum 41 like grab the devil by the horns. In the part of the verse which is being stroked VERY fast, I seem to have a problem being able to do that, Anyone have any helpful advice on being able to upstroke single strings while palm muting at a fast pace?

If it's done very fast, don't use a pick. Put either your index finger or middle finger together with your thumb, like you would pinch something. Then use the nail of your index/middle finger to do the down stroke, and the nail of your thumb to do an upstroke. And you can use bottom of your hand, the area under your thumb to mute if neccisary.

i just d/l-ed that song... from what i gather you're talking about the palm muted triplets for the riff... (a staple of any old metallica song hehehe) i hate to burst your bubble but that's not VERY fast
the way i always played those riffs was with a pic but use alternating strokes... not just upstrokes... rest the fleshy part of your hand (behind the thumb) on the string... but only to the point where the string is muffled as opposed to completely muted... you'll get a better sound and the same effect... basically you want the note to die out as soon as it's hit as opposed to already being dead before you play it...
