as far as i know, not one of those artists should be considered emo. instead, they should enter a mental hospital and seek treatment that their cars won't give them.

my opinion is that they are all whiny crap.

my other opinion is that what is conceived as emo these days is so far from what emo used to be it's almost sad. that's not development, it's blatant change. music magazines and MTV have learnt to nearly totally disregard music history when labelling new bands.

having said that, i also think original emo is crap too. so there you go.

So why bother posting?
There are loads of threads on Emo, I love the 'whiny crap' but some people are pretty up themselves and have to go round slagging it off. I reckon you are going to get more than a few posts slating emo here.
I love the three bands you listed, the Get Up Kids are one of my fave all time bands. Listen to early Jimmy Eat World, The New Amsterdams, Sunny Day Real Estate they are a few more of my faves.

You go Girl !! Tell em like it is.

It is bad enough that this EMO crap is posted in the punk section now it is spreading like an insidious plague. There is no escape.

but why not? just because i don't like it doesn't mean i'm automatically barred from voicing that opinion on a forum.

the qustion was asked, "what do you think about emo in general", and the asker got my reply. i don't see it as up myself or pretentious in any way.

i thought that everyone knew these days that dashboard are not emo. they're pop-rock that sings about their problems. i don't see how that makes them emo. and it is also under my understanding that the majority of emo died in the mid-nineties.

Ya, my bad, I really hadn't, in fact, this was my first post in this site, forgive me. And they are not whiny! Tell me, what is your definition of emo anyways? But other than that, Im sorry for this thread, you can get rid of it.

i hate going over and over this.

i've always understood emo as a genre born in the mid/late-'80s, spawned from the punk movement, blah blah blah, bands didn't last very long and were underground, blah blah blah, recorded/pressed their stuff onto vinyl only, always limited, and did the covers and crap themselves, extremely independant. shows were incredibly cheap and there wasn't an awful lot of publicity out of the whole "scene". lyrics were most often screamed (think screamo) and during shows songs were brutalised, etc. the whole thing died mid/late-'90s.

emo isn't just music that evokes emotion from the listener. all music does that, that explanation doesn't fit the genre. bands like joan of arc, orchid, saetia [insert other obscure bandname here].

i'm probably wrong, but i may be onto something. i don't like emo, i've told you that, but that's what i am told it is.

Nice definition, I love it, thats almost exactly what I would have put if I wereasked the same question, Im especially surprised that someone with such dislike of this certain music type would have such an elaborate definition of Emo, well, more like explination of how it became, but what better way to define something than to reviel its past? So Cheers to you.
