Question Pushing The Boundries

What Experimental music out there at the moment do you think is pushing the boundries of musical thinking the furthest and why?

I always thought John Duncan, Andrew Chalk, H.N.A.S., Mika Vainio, and Christian Fennesz, have been pushing the unexpected boundaries, maybe i'm missing a few, but we can always discuss things.

Could you guy's give me some things that make music experimental? Like what makes it go that extra step to become that way.

perhaps music that has no rhythm, no boundaries...no melody, nor harmony, just flowing and then an urgent stop, then back to something else, changing every 2 seconds, or not changing at all...

I prefer music with some melody though, like GYBE!, they're experimental and avant garde yeah, but they still make beautiful music...

All I really know is Sun-Ra. A jazz experimentalist of sorts.

There's just so far you can take the experiements before it becomes something other than what I choose to call "music". I liked a lot of the musical experimentation of the late 60s (the psychedelic era that Psychedelic Syd and I love so dearly). There was a group of UCLA students who did an incredible album called "The United States Of America" back in '69. They seemed to be taking up where John Lennon's "Revolution 9" had left off, but combining the sound collages with songs in a fresh way as well. And it was wonderful stuff.

Speaking of "Revolution 9", I always wondered why that didn't spark a whole movement of pop art sound collages. I think "Revolution 9" was a very valid work of art, and got a lot of undeserved flak from people who didn't have a clue about the 20th century musical movements that were inspiring Lennon when he did that.

Are there any artists that still do that kind of thing, and do it as well or better than Lennon did on "Revolution 9"? If there are, I'd love to know about it.
