rap is music?
you know, sometimes i wish i was black so i could become a rapper and have sex all i wanted....wait let me say it in "street", **** all these hoes i wanted. these so called "rappers" don't give a damn about the musical quality at all, all they care about is getting some damn pussy. oh yea, they also get to wear super-extra-baggy pants, and the coveted "phat farm". oh how cool is that. all of these rappers just need to go pull there "9 millimeter" and end it all. the rest of us would be alot better, if there wasn't all these rappers around. but tell me what you think, i'd like to hear it.

Ok, are we talking about rappers in general or just the commercial image of rap? There is some amazing hip hop out there and some great lyricists. As for the Rappers you described it is entirely an image thing, it bothers me a little but it is no different from the dumb commercial image that rock or pop or any other genre that has been capitalised on has.

i totally agree but i bet if you checked out 'proper' hip hop (j5, ugly duckling, roots, de la soul) you'd realise its only the r and b stuff which is bollox!

Well said bec. Mainstream can do whatever they ****ing well like, wear baggy pants, and make money while doing it, but people who truly appreciate the genre will steer away from anything in the top 40.

I hadn't realised you were into independent and underground Hip Hop! I guess I underestimated you, I'm used to people being into commercial hip hop! Sorry! Guess what? I saw De La Soul at Glastonbury this year! What other stuff do you like? I saw DJ Format and Abdominal at Glastonbury too and then Dangermouse and Gemini at Reading! I love live hip hop, its great!

Well, I consider rap at best to be a legitimate art form that uses some musical aspects. But I tend to see pure rap as something other than music, and I consider myself a music fan as opposed to a rap fan.

i think i see your point... where 'pure' rap is strictly verbal correct? but by that token any purely vocal style wouldn't be 'real' music (barbershop quartets etc.)

On the contrary, barbershop quartet singing involves all three of the basic components of music: melody, harmony, and rhythm, so it would be music by definition. Solo singing without accompanyment could be argued to be something less than "musical", but most music scholars would disagree with that contention.
"Pure" rap, it could be argued, is at least musical to the degree that it employs rhythm.
Then of course, there is that minority of modernist music people who contend that any time sound is organized in any way, that constitutes music.
Anyway, as a rule I don't dig rap, so why am I even commenting on this thread?
