Well...my take on all this is that I didn't listen to music through most of my teens and its only since p2p came along that I've started to listen to them again. The trouble was obviously terribly high price of the music, and I didn't like the music on tv enough to go out an buy them.

However, now I have bought more albums(though only ones in which I like just about every track) that I've done ever before.
However, I will say that I don't delete any of my mp3s even if I don't like the songs(..must do something with a 250gig hdd ).

Question Slackers-Legal?

I'm just curious, maybe someone can help me out before I rip on the RIAA. There is a store in town that sells used cd's called Slackers (hastings does as well). What happens is, you take in your old cd's, and sell em to Slackers, then you can chose from an assortment of used cd's for anywhere from $3 to $8. To my knowledge, none of that money goes to the artist........ So why is selling/buying (actually, it's sharing) used cd's legal, yet sharing cd's over a peer to peer network or burning a cd is not legal. I'm either ignorant on the topic, or making a very valid point.

I've told this story a million times and ill tell it again... pre-napsters I owned zero CDs, tapes, etc.... I now own over 200... at roughly lets say 15 bucks a piece....plus I buy a ton of magazines.... 2 guitars, drum kit, amps, concert tickets....oh.. at books/biographies...oh and dvds...

You see p2p sharing can help people get into music.. the internet has changed the world.... video games are downloaded, movies are downloaded before they hit the theatres... it is a crazy world we live in... and it seems easy to blame p2p sharing as the cause of music problems...

I believe Thrice said it best.... they said they would rather have someone buy their cd and come to their show... but if they had to choose just one... they would choose to have people come to their show...

I do not download music... first off those p2p sharing progs are nothing but a big backdoor into your computer... and I simply like to own the CD, case, notes etc...

I do however have a problem with people telling me that dling a cd is stealing (or taking money outta of an artists pockets) it is not... if this person had no intention of buying the cd to begin with then nothing is lost...

lets say however that someone dls a cd and loves it.... so they are a fan of this band, or artist or whatev... hopefully they will like the band enuff to buy their next cd... or go to their show or whatev.... peopel always seem to look at the negative side of p2p... but there is a very positive side as well...

Us Hillbillies used to call them Revinooers!

I've told the Rev my feelings on another board but I love repeating myself so here goes.
Radio is over.
When him and me (like my English?)
when we was putting music in our brains, radio ownership was a whole lot of different little honey bees. Now, it's like 8 companies. Big companies who use their big media to promote their big interests.

I think (even though I've never done it myself) downloading now does the job that radio once did.
Now, having said that, I know the Flaming Lips arent' getting rich because WAY over half the people I know who dig them are yet to fork over any DOUGH. BUT, they know what they're doing. Maybe they'll go see a show or buy a t-shirt.

So, I think turning downloading into a Federal Offence is really really stupid.
The Industry needs to come up with ideas that appeal to CONSUMERS not to punish them.

Things like Greendale having a free DVD, that seems to me a much more imaginative approach.

Oh, and I've decided, if I ever DO download a song, what song it shall be.
"Genius of Love" by The Tom Tom Club.
I have heard this song and covers of this song every other summer for over 20 years!
I don't think I'm taking bread out of anybody's mouth if I hear it a few zillion times more.
more or less.

Every time some major change has happened to music, the music industry bitched, whined, and complained:

When music was first recorded

When radio got big

When cassette tapes came out

and now, when internet pirating has gotten really huge. The music market has changed forever, and those changes are simply unreversable. The RIAA just won't fess up to that. Instead of adapting to the new market, they're trying to change the unchangable and hiding behind Uncle Sam and his copyright laws that dont' say a damn thing (or at least are very ambiguous) about file copying and sharing.

thats exactly my philosophy. If I dload a cd and I like it I'll gladly fork over the cash. If its not i never would of even bought the cd in the first place. I dont buy a cd until im a 100% sure its worth my hard earned cash, also if i want to support this band for whatever reason.

Well, I really don't see why I should pay 1$ for a song while I can download it for free! If CDs were much cheaper (say, about 5$) I'd buy more CDs. As far as I've heard the artists are usually the last ones to profit from record-sales, unlike what the major-labels say.
