"you need to speed up those little dancing figures they look like they are drunk, instead of dancing to V Snares"

try blinking VERY fast while watching those stick figures dancing.
it speeds up things a bit - a nice strobe effect - but you might feel a bit nauseated afterwards.

ahem.

I'm too tired to do that right now, I may fall asleep if I do it, which could be a good thing!

I think the label intelligent dance music is pretentious, aloof and laughable.

Why intelligent? How does such a stupid label become standard? There must be a lot of people out there into this genre that are aloof and pretentious when it comes to their musical taste. Otherwise the label would not have caught on.

It seems that the lable suggests that other forms dance music that do not fall into this genre are
not intelligent. If you ask me intelligent dance music is music that is good to dance to, but then again who is asking me.

Well not really. You could get a perfect 909 bass/hat patter with a one note bassline that makes you shake your booty but it's far from intelligent.

IDM as a rule is pretty bloody awful - if not impossible to dance to! Every singe word is incorrect but it was all they could think of at the time..

I - Intelligent
Well, it's rhythmically complex but usually harmonically simple. There is a lot more music out there that is more intelligently written or takes more intelligence to understand

D - Dance
er... no

M - Music
Well, any noise made with the thought behind it of it being musical is music in my eyes, but I went through a John Cage phase and not everyone will agree with me!

So taking the phrase as a whole..

Intelligent Dance music.
Well Dance music was the only phrase that people could think of to describe electronic music that worked heavily with rhythms but you can't dance to it so it's music for listening.

If you conjure up the image of a man smoking a pipe listening to music for listenings sake you think of the intelligent man or something.

Nah, the intelligent comment is lost on me. I still prefer the term Glitch myself.

basically, what it comes down to is this, IMO:
it's just dance-y music which works way better in my bedroom and on my headphones, rather than in some kind of club to be danced to.

home-listening electronic music.

or maybe, i'm just full of shite.

....

anyone for a glass of freshly discovered hot, hot water?
