I'm looking into buying my own PA equipment, but I'm kinda running on a tight budget. I want to know what the good mixers are. I'm looking for something around 16 channels or so with sound quality good enough for amature recording. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

On a tight budget, I personally wouldnt be looking for a 16 track mixer. I'll get back to you on this, but off the top of my head, the YAMAHA RMX-200 is around 16 channels... think I got the name wrong...
Ya actually thats the one that i have been looking at. Is there anything else around the same price range with fewer channels that you think is better?

Have you considered any of Behringer's products?. They have very good quality stuff for a very competitive price. You will definitely get a result if you're looking at making and amateur recording!
Ya i looked into some of those. But they really just dont have very good quality sound. Seems that their impedency level is lower than some of the others.

The mixer I decided to get was an Yamaha 01v which can be a 24 track mixer if you add the appropriate expansion to it. It's and excellent mixer and boast of some really amazing features. I would personally recomend you save some extra cash and get yourself a digital mixer too. What about second hand stuff, you can probably find and 01v or 02r for a really affordable price?
Be careful with secondhand mixers, there's often heaps of lil bugs that you dont find out about till your at a gig. Finding out the left channel output is dead on your (sort of ) new 12 track mixer halfway through soundcheck is not a good feeling.
