how could IDM go mainstream, much less electronic music as a whole?? house/rave music is the only mainstream music, and perhaps trance, that I know of and I just don't see it any other way...

why would it be so bad if the mainstream adapted itself to like IDM?

If IDM became popular it would indicate a huge shift in peoples minds which I would welcome, but I think is incredibly unlikely!

correct me if I am wrong, aphex twins and other warp artists are very popular in europe, correct? but not as popular as britney spears or justin timberlake.

I really don't care if IDM will go mainstream because there will always be people doing good stuff underground. you just have to dig them out.

another good thing is that I can find things much easier in a record store if IDM goes mainstream.

one thing for sure, not IDM, but Merzbow would never become mainstream.

that's a great point, the market price value on these artists would go down (cd wise), and labels would have to start making more cd's, but then again, i doubt this will happen...

and about Masama Akita, you have another great point there, as long as he's been around, I highly doubt it

I doubt that IDM would go mainstream like in the mid 90's, when techno went MTV-popular because a lot of IDM songs don't have the pop song structure. and a lot of them are experimental in nature anyway. I am pretty sure a lot of MTV/mainstream audience would not like that kind of music. and the good thing about techno went mainstream 90's was record stores stocking up on electronic stuff.

plus, a lot of IDM songs have no vocal. I am not talking about dialogue samples. as far as I have noticed, a lot mainstream audience doesn't like instrumental music. they need something they can sing along.
