"are there any instrumental songs on his proper album releases?"

i'm afraid i don't understand what you mean by 'instrumental songs on his proper album releases'?
you mean post-'role model' "hiphop" albums or...?

Would the world be better without genres? I don't pretend not to be influenced by genres,
(i.e. "what is this?" - " it is 'Free Jazz' sir" - "Oh shit") but doesn't a simple good/bad explanation work better?

My redundancy over this issue even kills me...

I feel genres are needed only when classifying the type of music made, and not to pigeonhole one artist.

For instance, look at aphex twin, he's the essence of the word "IDM", yet he makes classical compositions, ambient, noise, drill n bass (at times), yadda yadda, ya know?

how else would you explain without genres? Some people mean to put someone within a category and say "they play drum n bass" or "they program IDM"...and I try not to do that, although to get someone oriented with the music, this is where I feel genres come in to play, and then as your knowledge broadens and the horizons look sweeter, then genres can be declassified and you can converse with each other on a level where you don't need any, but just the simple explanation of what it means to you, personally.

Yeah, I really wasn't trying to offer anything new though, frustrations just don't die easily. It is something INESCAPABLE, like cheese, death etc.

Even here - "For instance, look at aphex twin, he's the essence of the word "IDM", yet he makes classical compositions, ambient, noise, drill n bass (at times), yadda yadda, ya know?"

Describing how pointless genres are by using genres. (It was a good point, I don't mean to abuse you, sorry)

Anyway, that's the last of my thoughts on genres,

Yours Sincerely,

Bill Hicks

"sorry, let me clarify myself, when I mean "instrumental" I mean without vocals..."

no no.. i got confused by "instrumental albums" vs "instrumental songs", and by "proper album release".
i mean, 'role model' is mainly instrumental. there is this remix of the dismemberment plan, and sampled voices a la boards of canada here and there.
but mainly it's nice beats and cutesy melodies.

and the cd itself a sleeve, cover art and tracklist on the back, so i guess this makes the 'role model' proper album release...

"i got confused by "instrumental albums" vs "instrumental songs"

meaning, if the album is instrumental, then, as sure as hell, there's going to be a couple of instrumental songs there, non?

i meant to say "he's the essence of what people conceive to be 'IDM' "

sorry, but I know what you mean, that statement looks a bit contradictory...

I really don't care if IDM will go mainstream because there will always be people doing good stuff underground. you just have to dig them out.

another good thing is that I can find things much easier in a record store if IDM goes mainstream.

one thing for sure, not IDM, but Merzbow would never become mainstream.

apx is not popular in europe. at least not as popular as spears. idm is not popular. IDM is popular in me, its pop. AND I DONT ****IN CARE!!!

so you are telling me Richard James was never popular in Europe? Give me a break. He may not be as popular as Britney Spears is now, but at one time, I'm sure he was pretty close, at least to the electronic world...IDM is pop? hmm...
