yep panbient, you can play guitar. but who's playing drums behind you then ? When you create a song with your computer, YOU lead the way. But in a band, you need more organisation... or you have to play guitar, drums, bass, and sing.
(but that's off-topic too...)
IDM (or exp, or ambient) is kind of like a background music for movies, ads... For example, I heard Oval in an ad for a perfume, I heard Squarepusher's Anirog9 and Ae's Tewe in the presentation of a skate movie...

Having been someone who has wrote punk and IDM, Punk is so much easier..
And yes, you CAN write punk on a computer, you just need good drum sounds, a guitar, bass and mic and a sense of how a drummer thinks.
Once you have written the music to 30 seconds of a punk track you've done it all, it's then just arranging it into the typical structure.
With IDM you can either repeat the same idea doing subtle changes for 10 minutes (a la autechre) or Completely change every few seconds (a la Vsnares) So you are always deciding what to do with each few seconds of a track.

very good comments indeed, i highly respect your views and your intelligence on issues such as these...
and Pigfreezer mentioned before that if you working as a group, it leads to more organization, which is true because everyone has their own interpretation or own thoughts into what the song or project may become, and also one person can make an IDM song and put all their thought into it primarily, but then again, you have to look at Matt Mahaffey of Self, which may be a prime example of one person having an idea about a song, and then playing every instrument on the album collectively. This seems like a harder task than making any IDM track or having 3-5 people think on one scale to create a song...but then again, also, Squarepusher did it for "music is rotted one note" which makes these guys brilliant multi-instrumentalists...

fantastic yet not so good

"but didn't Pharrel do just about everything for mr. Timberlake?"
to tell you the truth, i'm not sure. all i know is that timbaland appears in 'cry me a river' video with a 10 second rap. so i thought he was the one responsible for the music.
and, frankly, pharell (neptunes) have this trademark sound of theirs. this one doesn't sound like it was produced by him/them.
but, like i said, dunno, i might be wrong.
enough with the off-topic stuff.
as to punk vs. idm discussion.
for me, the punk was much more about the ATTITUDE than music.
the music was just another way of expressing yrself, and in those days three-chord songs were a neat way to express yourself.
so... dunno... i think that, for instance, kid606/vsnares mash-up massacre hits could be considered punk, in a sort of way...
