Try stuff by The White Stripes, it's simple and catchy. 'Seven Nation Army' is a really good start - My roommate just started guitar last month and it's the only song he knows how to play, but from it he's learned how to do small parts of other songs without any other practice.

Yeah, Seven Nation Army and Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground are good for practicing single note riffs and power chords. Hotel Yorba(also by the White Stripes) is good for some basic chords, and try We're Gonna Be Friends for some simple finger picking practice.
