alright... fade to black is a good choice as a future goal song... it incorporates a lot of different elements but i'd say it's one of metallica's tougher songs to play... enter sandman shouldn't be that hard... the biggest issue being switching from playing a single note riff to chords...

i'd recommend you find a copy of 'for whom the bell tolls' and start with that... it's probably metallica's simplest song to play and it's pretty slow (for them) and it'll help you build up a lot of technique for their faster songs... the intro is good for getting used to switching betweem chords and single note riffs... and the chugging riff will build up your bar chords like nothing else... and the other riff will get you working on palm muting a single note with chord accents...

once you get that song down enter sandman shouldn't be much of a stretch...

the riff is an identifiable rhythm part... it's usuaully the musical hook of the song... it's what people hum if they don't know the words...

that's a good one to practice your strumming with... it's really just 3 chords repeated over and over... don't worry so much about the picking at first... i'd say concentrate on changing chord shapes smoothly and strumming... if i remember right the strumming pattern is 'down down up up pause/switch' for the whole thing...

one thing i've noticed a lot with new guitar players is that they strum from their elbow and it just doesn't sound right... strumming is ALL in the wrist...

The main riff to Enter Sandman is a piece of cake, the rythym intro to One is easy too. Actually the lead intro isn't too bad, those all sound pretty good...They're Metallica of course they do.

I've been playing for about a year now, and I still don't know Fade to Black, pretty difficult I'm assuming, been so long since I looked at it.

Keep trying on Time of Your Life, I don't like the song but I'll admit it is like the perfect beginner song to learn. Like Pan said it's good for practicing your strumming, and when you get the chords down it's good for single note picking.

Once you learn that you should try Oasis "Wonderwall" another good one to practice strumming. It uses basically the same chords as Time of Your Life, they both are just moving around that G modal chord.

another really easy song if you want to listen to something from 10 years ago (and can handle perry farrel's voice) is 'jane says' by jane's addiction... the entire song is about switching between G and A for 4 minutes...
