INTERPOL – ANTICS

Interpol’s debut in 2002, ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’, was hailed by most as “debut of the year and album of the year by many. Comparisons to the great Joy Division abound, many believed that it would be these of New Yorkers, not The Strokes, who would be the band of the nameless decade. Well, just as ‘Room On Fire’ raised hints of doubt for Strokes-backers, so to does ‘Antics’ for the Interpolers.

It’s not that ‘Antics’ is bad album- it isn’t. But like The Strokes’ sophomore effort, ‘Antics’ shows no growth for Interpol. When you listen to this album its as if you’ve heard all these songs before (the sentiment is literal for the album closer which originally appeared on 2001’s ‘Precipitate’ EP) and know you’ve heard them done better. Missing is the urgency of ‘Obstacle 1 & 2’ and the majesty of ‘NYC’, replaced by the by-the-numbers ‘Next Exit’ and ‘Slow Hands’. The album has its highlights like the tapper ‘Evil’ and token acronym track ‘NARC’ but they are ultimately dimmer than those off ‘…Bright Lights’.

This coupled with the fact that the album is only ten tracks long, one of which is just a new mix of an old b-side, makes for an overall underwhelming effect to one of this year’s most highly anticipated records. It will grow on you but not enough to change your mind.

You should get people to send you their demos and you can review them, it would be the best of both worlds.

No offense Chris, but how can your reviews be so grammatically correct, have astonishing punctuation, and be very wordy, whilst your posts be sloppy?

As I said, it's nothing against you, it just seems a bit weird to me.

TEGAN AND SARA – SO JEALOUS

Tegan and Sara’s new album, the follow-up to 2002 Shortlist Music Prize nominee If It Was You, is aptly named- after you hear So Jealous that’s exactly how you’ll feel.

Only 24 years old, this is Tegan and Sara’s third major release with Vapor/Sanctuary Records. Where the last album was a return to a more raw, punk sound, So Jealous is a perfect piece of pop that still maintains that edge. The first single, ‘Walking With A Ghost’, is a haunting track about escaping the haunts of past relationships. The title track is equally ominous with its paranoid atmosphere and lyrics.

Again, this record is about irresistibly catchy guitar tunes [fleshed out beautifully with more keyboards and other electronic effects than past albums] and the girls’ wonderfully unique and harmonized vocals. No one right now is writing better 2-4 minute pop tunes than these twins from Calgary and the proof is all through this album. From upbeat gems like ‘Take Me Anywhere’, ‘Speak Slow’ and many more, to slower, effectual tracks like closer ‘I Can’t Take It’, it’s all here. Still so young, Tegan and Sara are compiling a catalogue that is truly special.

My reviews are shit, so I can't really criticize.

It would be nice if I could understand your posts though. If you don't care, what's the use in "fooking" posting
