I know the Lyrics to most old Madonna songs
One of my first favourite songs was "We Built this city (on Rock and Roll)" by Starship

First off, this is a really cool idea for a thread. Now for some confessions...

1. Well, I first started listening to music in 1984 and I was into all the most popular stuff at the time. My record and tape collections still have a few artifacts from this time period, like: Hall and Oates, Chaka Khan, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna (of course), New Edition, Pointer Sisters, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner and Wham!

2. A few months ago I was driving around without a CD and I turned on the local hard rock station. They were playing a block of Def Leppard, circa the Hysteria days, and I was totally digging it. Now I have Hysteria on tape, I bought it back when it came out, but I almost rushed to the store to get it on CD.

3. When I was young, I used to be a big fan of comedy rock, like Julie Brown and Weird "Al" Yankovic. I was such a geek.

4. My dad has an old videotape of my sister and I doing a performance of the Fat Boys' underground hit "The Human Beat Box". Since I knew ALL the words, I did the rapping and my sister beat-boxed. That tape has all kinds of other embarassing performances on it...

5. I'm a fan of bluegrass. I'm not personally ashamed by it, but I gather most people around here think anything country that doesn't have the word "alt-" in front of it is pure sh*t, so it qualifies as a confession. Bill Monroe, Flat & Scruggs, Jim & Jennie & The Pinetops... You peeps don't know what you're missing.

General Comments

I don't think anyone should feel embarassed about liking Marilyn Manson or Garbage. I'm an unashamed Marilyn Manson fan, up to and including Mechanical Animals.

Maybe you should be ashamed about Limp Bizkit, but I guess they were kind of alright at first. I happened to be at a music festival that they headlined a few years back, and I jumped around along with everyone else, so I can't talk too bad about them.

And seba_aethiad, I saw Styx back in '91. It wasn't exactly my idea, I was kinda dragged to it, I'm not embarassed. You're talking to a man who's seen both New Edition and Billy Joel live, so... (My sister's ideas, actually, but I went along.)

And spacemanspiff: Color Me Bad? That's f*cking hilarious! But I have to say that my roommate sophomore year spent two semesters trying to turn me into a CMB fan, and I finally admitted that one or two of their songs were OK.

I guess it's just a long hard road to having musical tastes that you can always be proud of, and there are lots of slip-ups along the way. Man, I think I've just lost all credibility on this forum. What a stupid idea for a thread!

I also liked Limp Bizkit once upon a time and I also used to really like Nu-Metal when I was in my teens.

Apart from that I don't really have much to say.

Oh man
1. I had a period in my earlier teens when I listened to Eminem, Dr. Dre, Linkin park and Limp Bizkit
2. I once thought that Depeche Mode's ''Enjoy the silence'' was a great song (I still think it's kinda fun, mainly for the lyrics)
3. I think S&M is Metallica's greatest album. I'm not sure if this is a bad thing, but some people seem to think it is.

What's wrong with liking Eminem and Dr. Dre? Hey may be a teen idol or whatever, but Eminem is still one of the best rappers out there. And Dr. Dre is a legend.

Dude, you're embarassed about liking Depeche Mode? That's a mark of good taste! "Violator" (which has "Enjoy the Silence") is a great album, one of my all-time favorites. They're a great group, nothing to be ashamed of.

Oh yeah, I not only liked Portrait, I actually read Manson's little autobiography thingy. To be fair, I read most of it during Mass, so the enjoyment came more from the joy of being "bad" than the actual book. (What can I say? I was a 15 year old Catholic school student.)

I'm pretty ashamed because it really wasn't a very good book. I should've read Camus or something instead.

6. I've always thought "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi was a great song, and I still do.
