look silly, once you cross that ambigious genre line and get all like 'emo is anything i want it to be; its EMOtional music!' then it doesnt mean anything any more. allow me to provide an example: the cure in the late 80's made some of the most famous 'boo hoo i am a sensitive artfag' music that appealed to vast audience of bedwetting thin white teenagers. but they arent emo! why? because look at the music; dark, layered, big production values. then move on to something like the getup kids. they have (count em) 4 chords per song, all their songs have crap high-school drama class poetry about girls dumping insecure boys. emo is barbarically simple, straightforward and stupid (welli think so at least). fugazi is innovative, minimalist, but experimental. they have an approach that is subdued and reserved. the get up kids just let it all out, there is no restraint, they dont think twice when they make a mindbogglingly bad lyric. the two styles have nothing in common. what? so they both ahve guitars? they both play 'alt' music? big deal, NOTHING IN COMMON.

This is from a fellow emo-hater: You guys are idiots. Fugazi is a TRUE emo band. The ancestor of emo. Although now emo is plagued with MTV gayness. So in a sense, Fugazi isn't emo.

when i first came to this forum i didn't understand this, was convinced i was listening to something other than pop punk, like the get up kids. Like Angry said Fugazi are the ancestors of the genre, im not exactly sure how it became to the present state but mtv had nothing to do with it. The explosion of projects like dashboard and others on mtv2 really is due to dashboard getting vagrant a shit load of money and their finally able to promote properly. I can't quite say why i like emo probably because of the easy relatability factor since im a highschool kid and honestly for me its just thinking about my girlfriend. The other majority of kids are wrapped up in the rap world and pretending to live those lifestyles. Might say we're a bunch of stupid kids but you gotta learn sometime if thats the case. Anyhow I'm confident in the punk-pop genre really doing it on their own and not just being marketing ploys. It's sad that now they finally get money and the jealousy sets in. I'm not calling the get up kids emo, their not and I think there are a bunch of people that come here calling it emo, its being marketed as that so you can't really blame them. Well if that had anything to do with anything im proud of myself since I dobut it did, why do you guys listen to your favorite genres?

genre battle

I find it sick and disgusting that people who call themselves fans battle over what genre their favorite band is, just shut up. music itself is a shitload more important than how u classify it! jesus i love all these bands you guys talk about but you whine so much over someone calling a specific band a certain genre, get a better subject to talk about.

They could be one of my most favourite EMO bands, so what hardcore do you like?

WHat do you think of INC?

You're not serious are you? Refused......EMO? no way.

and I must say, as good as refused are, I cant get into The International Noise Conspiracy as much, except for a couple songs. Theres still the politically motivated lyrics, but its just not Refused. I cant get into this 60's rock revival music thats happening now.

So I take it you don't like Fugazi

So are they or aren't they one minute we are idiots for saying they are not EMO then you say they are not EMO. Does that mean that you are an idiot as well?

Look I really don't give a shit what people call EMO, it makes no difference to be and does not detract from the music that I enjoy,
call poison idea EMO if you want.

I had never even heard of EMO before posting on this forum.
I first saw fugazi live in 1990 and they are still to this day one of the greatest live acts I have ever seen, their albums are also IMO quality albums. Nobody called them emo 13 years ago, they were just a really original alternative rock band that appealed to many people who were also into punk rock.

Now I like the descendents and Bad Religion and NOFX and Propagandhi, but a few years ago this evolution of melodic punk went really IMO crap. The blink 128, saves the day, sum 41 and the other bands which follow their style just really do not appeal to me. Now I hear people labeling them as EMO. Okay that is good at least they are not called punk rock anymore.
But now you are trying to incorporate Fugazi into this bunch just seems a bit strange to me.

I thought these EMO bands had their roots in the melodic punk of the descendents, Bad Religion, NOFX, even bands like the Buzzcocks. Just because Ian McKay sings with feeling in his voice?? does that automatically lump fugazi as EMO, if that is so my post in the "what is your favourite EMO song" thread stands Barbara Strisand is EMO.
