i know i talk about this album a lot but i think any jazz fan should give a listen to eric dolphy's 'last date' album... same with herbie hancock's 'head hunters'... and for the more experimental jazz fan... squarepusher's 'hard normal daddy'...

can't really offer much for the blues though...

Wow how long has this been a sub-forum??? I've gotta start paying attention.

I dont listen to very much jazz. Improv never really clicked with me. But as far as blues goes I would recommend checking out guys like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne Sheppard etc etc.....I know these names are ones that you'll hear from everyone but they got that way for a reason.
Also for something a little different check out Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

an "essential blues" list must include at least one CD by Robert Johnson

at least one

I would recommend the new cd "Martin Scorsese presents: Robert Johnson"...has a great collection of songs from the way-too-early death great
