What have you heard that you like? Also, do you have a problem listening to music that was recorded with much older technology? What kind of music are you interested in currently? I can give you a better answer then.

Here are just a few essential jazz recordings, which should be part of every collection. I am limiting the avant/free recordings, since I don't know your tastes.

Louis Armstrong - Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven (The Rosetta Stone of Jazz, this is considered one of the most essential recordings. But keep in mind it was recorded in the 1920's)

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (generally considered one of the top 2 in Jazz history by most listeners)
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (deluxe edition)
John Coltrane - Ascension
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
Bill Evans - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Sonny "Newk" Rollins - a Night at the Village Vanguard
Sonny "Newk" Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Charles Mingus - A Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Charlie "Bird" Parker - The Quintet: Live at Massey Hall (is considered one of the best live recordings in Jazz history.)
Charlie "Bird" Parker - Complete Savoy & Dial Recordings (The Holy Grail of Bird)
Bud Powell - The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1 & 2
Thelonious Monk - Genius of Modern Music, Vol 1 & 2
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport 1956 (Complete)
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
Dizzy Gillespie - Complete RCA Victor Recordings
Dizzy Gillespie - Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
Count Basie - Original American Decca Recordings
Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear

a few blues essentials

Son House - Delta Blues
Son House - Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Sessions
Charley Patton - Founder of the Delta Blues
Charley Patton - King of the Delta Blues
Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings
Sonny Boy Williamson - The Essential Sonny Boy Williamson
Blind Willie Johnson - Dark Was the Night
Howlin' Wolf - His Best
Blind Lemon Jefferson - King of the Country Blues
Blind Blake - Ragtime Guitar's Foremost Fingerpicker
Lonnie Johnson - Steppin' on the Blues

I have no reason to be ashamed. Since Parlor didn't specify a vocalist or for that matter any specifications of any kind, I didn't include one. I would have listed Lady Day who is my favorite if he had requested one initially. There is a reason I included the questions I did so I could elaborate further depending on the answers given. I would have done the same for the blues.

Instead of posting for the sole purpose of attacking my post what kept you from posting your own list? To busy attacking me to list any Lady Day recordings or list anything for that matter?

I take the time to help someone’s request for recommendations while you take the time to attack. Who do you really think comes across of needing to feel ashamed between the two of us?

The blues belong to Otis Rush.

Since blueleaf was too busy attacking to bother listing anything here are my 3 favorite female vocalists.

Billie Holiday - pretty much everything she did is essential from my point of view but I would pick up the Decca, Commodore and Columbia sets.

Ella Fitzgerald - I would go with Complete Ella in Berlin, Pure Ella, any of the Songbook recordings, the complete Ella and Louis Armstrong.

Sarah Vaughn - her Emarcy recordings especially Sarah Vaughn with Clifford Brown, After Hours, Copacabana, In the Land of Hi-Fi, Sassy Swings the Tivoli.

I am not a fan of Simone myself. Maybe blueleaf can take some time away from attacking and do something productive like posting her own list.

we're suppose to be able to edit/delete posts if we're the moderator of ANY part of the forum. for some reason we can't even do that now, at least I don't have that option.
