well, I'm quite new to electronic music but I'm listening to autechre for a long time now, and like you I didn't like Confield at first. But you have to listen to it from the beginning to the end. It's magical. I had the same feeling with Draft 7.30 !

draft 7;30 is way less experimental and way more hip hop than I would have expected.
great album but I think confield will became a legend in the same way as tri repetae or autechre -lp5-.

A lot of people find confield a bit too cold and detached. Personally I like it a lot, but I prefer Draft 7.30 over it!

confield is not as easy listening as draft 7;30 or even grantz graf which, in despite of being an experiemtnal album: sounds a bit "comercial"
confield is the best album that autechre has done since autechre.

i understand what you mean about the "commerciality" of gantz graf, whilst the single sounds experimental like Confield, the latter 2 songs seem a bit more elementary...

grantz graf sounds way too good, it's like made with samplers from action films.
draft 7;30 is like that but with the hip hop thing.
for me this two represent the end of an era and a return to sound loud, wicked and powerful.
confield might be autechre's last great album.

eh, I think they have quite a few more ideas in them perhaps, they may take inspiration from some other acts coming out and "shift" their ways, who knows.

I think in Draft 7.30 they focussed more on the synthesis techniques. On Confield a lot of the sounds were fairly standard, but the way it was composed was really non-standard.
The composition is more normal on Draft 7.30 but the sounds and textures are stranger and deeper.
Depends what you want really.
Besides it's not like you can ever really second guess what autechre are going to do next. I thought LP5 was a bit boring and wasn't looking forward to confield and when it came out it was great. When Gantz Graf came out I was half expecting a noise album next and instead they've brought out a really organic album that appears to breathe even.
Who knows what's next!
