Good topic.

Here are my thoughts. I listen to classical music when i study, and i go through about 3 cd's a study session. So i hope i've heard enough of the classic to put foward my favourites.
Hope the names fit the composition though!

Chopin - Nocturne no 20 in C minor (the one played by Adrian Brody in the begininng of 'the Pianist")

Strauss - The blue Danube (everyones probably heard this one) -When Homers eating the chips on board the NASA shuttle and he crashes into the ant colony

Ravel - Bolero (For all romantics, although most men won't last the entire song!!)

Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No ? (for that bit in the middle of the composition)
But overall Etude No 3 'la campanella' for its pure speed and pace

Schubert - German dance in C major Op. 33 ( how can anyone overlook this one as one of the greatest waltzes ever - pardon my ignorance if this isn't a waltz, but it sounds like one)
Also his unfinished pieces are menacing.

Thats all for now, i'll put more in later

"Gnossienne N°3" is great, I recently got me a compilation of Satie's pianowork, performed by Patrick Cohen and it's really good... My first classical cd, actually...

For LV Beethoven - 7th Symphony, I would stry to get Solti instead, not a big deal for a first time listener I would guess. I tend to prefer Solti for the Symphonic stuff, even though he is not as tight as others. So much heart I also do not like Berstein as a conductor... These are minor personal differences Geroge Szell, also hungarian by the way, is also a super conductor. I like these two a lot... Others don't...
