Gah! Metal is rock!
It's silly how people insist of segregating genres just so they can feel that the type of music they listen to it special or different.

Listen, if someone asks you: "Do you listen yo rock." Then, simply for the sake of speaking English with a decent grasp of proper vocabulary, then you would have to say "yes" if you listen to metal.

Aw.. =(
Metal: Music. Heavy metal.

Rock: Music. To play or dance to rock 'n' roll; Music. Rock 'n' roll.

..Not the same =(
Metal isn't special, but if it has a separate definition and can be distinguished by others as "metal," but not "rock," they are not the same thing. Not rediculous =) I for one wouldn't tell people I listen to rock if I'm more into metal, and I can speak for my friends and say they'd probably go crazy if someone told them they listen to "rock" and not "metal." It's not really a big deal, just getting back to the subject-- that if a lot of people would rather distinguish the two, it needs its own section. That is still :under: the rock category, as it is a spinoff. =)

The private believes that there is a clear difference between Rock and Metal and also believes this is because in Metal it is mighty heavier and has more use of drum and bass, Sir!
