i always write lyrics, good ones, but then i get really frustrated when it comes to the melody, you can't force it. but i come up with random melodies and songs if i just start spontaneously making them up. it actually works...for me! another tip, if you're inspired to write something, brainstorm everything in your head onto paper before you lose it and then form it into a rhyming song later. good luck! (to you AND me)

I do the same thing.
To write the best stuff you need to write what you know and what you feel.

The Mod is on to something really important. Your the man. I'm a singer/songwriter myself, and when it comes to my personal experience I've found writing a song shouldn't be a choir. What I mean is...don't expect to write something special to you, if your doing it for someones else's opinion. Write to get something off your chest, write to inspire yourself, write for the pure joy of getting personal emotions into a format where you can go back and remember them later. What Mod said about just singing lyrics as you go, is brilliant, especially when your emotional at that point in time. Go with the flow, and don't stop. Another way is to start on a topic that means something to you, and just free write. put down anything, ANYTHING, then after your done filling the page go back and surprise yourself. You might find 1 sentence that catches your eye or the whole page. Give it a try.

The secret to good songwriting
Whats the secrets in making music?
one factor is to destroy any provisional obstacles. Music is all about experimentation and a drive to put everything you have into it. It corresponds to your emotions... your moods..your personality. Music wise: Jam with your songs 24/7 to learn every possible chord... every note that synchrinizes. The music supports the lyrics and the lyrics is what the song is really about. If a random line pops in your head...stop.. and write it on the wall. Listen to songs and try to understand their progressions and harmonies... if your a singer... the hardest part is finding rythem and melody. songs are the best way to learn... learn the music...learn the lyrics...sing to it..learn the chords..
hope that helps...

The way to write a song is to get the music first, some accidental collection of chords or a riff. Then you need a melody - this usually comes to you and the rest of the song will write itself.
Of course, its not as easy as it sounds...
The most difficult part is the melody, and also the most important part.
I dont know whether jamming a song all the time helps for me, lots of times you end up thinking "I know this song could be great. Why then does it sound so shit?" Then inspiration hits you at some point - it might be years after you started writing the bloody thing. I just wrote a chorus for a song thats been hanging around for 5 years. I liked the riff so never completely binned the song.
Im still working on the verses!!!

Lyrically, I think the key to writing a good interesting song is to just write about personal experiences or fantasys. Just keep going from there and make it interesting. Usually sad experiences are easier to write about unless you're reallly in love with something then you could write easily about that too.

Have a good one

I changed my lyrics to what I thought was so much more meaningful and...well...better. They said that they like my old way better and to write like that instead. So I quit. I'm now getting some people that I know like my lyrics and contribute to them. I guess when I listen to Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Matt Goodband and David Bowie, It's hard to write for people who like whatever is the top 40.
