for me free jazz is something radicvally different then the jazz I listen to, but not worse. Like the name says itself, it's free! Free jazz is not an easy piece of music to listen too, but that won't hold anyone back from not listening to it. Still I recommend giving it a listen. I like it, but not toooo much

i dig the free stuff hehehe... i've been into eric dolphy for a while and i've recently gotten into ornette coleman... i really want to find coleman's 'free jazz' album... the concept behind how the album was recorded sounds worthwhile to me.... 2 quartets improvising on the same ideas each panned to one side of the aural spectrum...

I love the intensity of Free-Jazz, it's the only music I've found that can have the same sort of physical affect on the listener as noise artists like Merzbow [or rather, noise has the same effect as Free-Jazz]. The risk-taking and radical nature of Free-Jazz has always appealed to me and there are really some great Free-Jazz artists/albums that should be appreciated more.

Some personal favs:

Cecil Taylor
Steve Lacy
Peter Brötzmann
Albert Ayler
Eric Dolphy
Han Bennink
Paul Bley
Art Ensemble of Chicago

To me free jazz is pretty cool.

Although, you cant just have it running somewhere in the background. There is some heavy stuff out there, definately not easy listening.

I'm personally a bit critical of Matthew Shipp.

I don't mind equilibrium, but it isn't anything to write home about.

Nu-Bop is mostly atrocious
