i'd definetely put fear factory as nu metal... but in the way forte describes it... they're definetely metal especially on their earlier albums... but they brought new elements to the typical metal style... especially vocally and texturally... i'd go so far as to say that demanufacture is the best metal album from the 90s...
besides... gary numan was new wave... hehe

Gary Numan was the man, lol... I don't know anything about new wave.
As for "nu" being "new," you're basically right. I don't always feel that way though because not all new bands who play metal are nu-metal.

That doesn't make sense... . How can you not feel that way if that's what it means?
If they're a new metal band... wouldn't they be Nu-Metal?

Because nu-metal I guess is also a type of style. It's hard to explain because it's not really solid. I'll try anyway...
It also goes through the different types of metal... For example, Slipknot IS nu-metal. Slipknot is basically the definition of the word. They were nu metal when they came out. Other bands came out around the same time (I can't really think of any) but the way the play their music and the type of the music it is... is more like the older style, rather than the new, or "nu" style.
It's about the style they take. It's not like theres a list written in stone on who is nu and who is not nu. A lot of it is opinion, and a lot of people share the same opinion, but it doesn't always make it so.
I also don't really expect you to understand it because you thought Metal shouldn't have it's own section because its basically the same as rock. (I believe that's around what you said before when you posted "this is ridiculous")

kinda like the way pearl jam / soundgarden / nirvana / alice in chains... all sounded quite different (especially on their later albums) but were all considered grunge... yet the smashing pumpkins weren't...

pps this forum in english or american?

I agree with Serena (Welcome to RadioMute! ), I like Nu-Metal because it has edge, and explores so many different facets.
But then again, I like just about everything. Especially Disturbed, Jamiroquai and Iron Maiden at the moment. Go figure.
P.S. I don't know if this forum is English or American - but it hardly makes a difference. We all speak English here, so no worries.
P.P.S. Does TOOL count as nu-metal?

I see.
Yea, not all new bands would be NuMetal because they might not play in a NuMetal style.
If so then, what are the characteristics of NuMetal?
I don't know how many of you have a musical education, but can you explain it's characteristics in tempo, melody, and rhythm? Is there a scale? How do they differ from other forms of metal?
I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time trying to point who is NuMetal. I guess it's not as simple as just being 'new'. So, if I'm ever listening to someone, how would I be able to point out say: "That's NuMetal".

I guess MOST of the Nu-Metal is Garbage, but you can get the ever so not often bands like Static X, Mushroom Head or even Trust Company.
There's also another band you might like "The Shizit" a little bent towards industrial, but metal is the root.

You guys gotta getcha some doomy-sludgy rock stuff like High on Fire, Electric Wizard, Fu Manchu, Karma to Burn. It's like (old)Metal, evolved, so ya don't need nu-metal.
It can be hard, it can be heavy, and it can be down, without b
eing stupid.
I will say I like Deftones and a little Static-x but I've mostly missed 'nu' concentrating on the really heavy evil stuff.
