To understand why Linkin Park is great, you have to look at what style they are going for.
Well that clears things up. If I had known they were trying to sound like crap I wouldn't be so hard on them.

The whole point of it is to try and understand it. Linkin Park's music has a ton of artistic merit. I challenge you to find it, considering your superficial viewpoint on music.

Linkin Park has artistic merit? Their lyrics follow Maddox's guidlines perfectly.

Writing bad poetry is easy when you disregard meter, pace, and rhyming scheme. Just make sure to follow a few simple guidelines:
1. Never write about anything cheerful. Remember, you are a tortured artist. Be one.
2. Be sure to use the following words at least once per sentence, no fewer than 50 times per poem: lament, loathe, soul, darkness, bitter, agony, despair, misery, anguish, pain, suffer, woe, hate, death, love, sultry, angel, rose, acrid and nihilism. Nihilism is a good one because it comes up all the time in normal conversations.

It's easy, here's a sample to get you started:

fire... burning... agony...
sultry shivers of a dark essence
why am i tortured with this nihilistic existence?
bitter... darkness... despair.

Wow....I gave you a fairly simple challenge, and yet, despite the simple nature of it, you have somehow managed to fail....incredible....it is almost as bad as celebrity jeopardy.

Well that's not much of an argument. You're assuming I've never given them a chance. My friend owns their stuff, I've heard it. It's just another commercialized band with pathetic, "I hate my life and my parents," style lyrics.

well i might as well have a go at giving the linkin park troll something to flame on...

first off i do not think they're original in any way... shape or form...

their deep lyrics about various mental states? can't be borrowed from korn... or the deftones... or soundgarden...

their musical style... not a cross between 311 and the stone temple pilots... nope... no korn mixed with pearl jam... can't be like the deftones playing in a soundgarden... nope... a little rage against the high school machine maybe?

they don't have their own style or color... they borrowed from others and dumbed it down to the point where it appealed to a teenage market that was too lazy to look beyond them to see the originators they took from...

(not that STP was really original but anytime i heard the chorus to 'in the end' on the radio all i could think of was an outtake from core)

I posted this thread because of something that happened the other day. My friend and I were driving and had the radio on, just flipping through stations and a Linkin Park song came on it didn't really bother me since I couldn't distinguish between this and some of the other bands that had been listened to during this driving time. He was sort've humming along and said he sort've liked it. I asked why and he said because its catchy. Then I proceeded to put a Led Zepplin album in and he asked if I take it out since he didn't know any of it. People like catchy music and thats not a problem but Linkin Park is so overated. As previously stated unoriginal lyrics and they don't have much emotion in it, something I look for in music. I don't see the artistic merit in their songs either and i'd appreciate if you pointed it out Rishijin because Mr. Soul seems to have a better arguement.

All in all I dislike music meant to sell records. I know that all bands would like to sell records but if money comes before quality then it becomes a problem, marketing geniuses not talent, i.e. eminem discovering 50 cent. Since you seem to be the only person that has this die hard love for them, what do you like Rishijin. I apologize beforehand if this is confusing or doesn't make sense.
