known as the Godfathers of IDM? I thought that was Aphex Twin? and i've NEVER thought of them as IDM musicians, I've thought of them as more experimental than anything else....and no, I'm not saying "label" something, it's more of a comparison title than anything, more for the person that doesn't know, rather than the person that has some type of knowledge of the industry.

My point is, for someone that's starting out listening to that type, it's hard to compare or label things w/o having "ambient", "experimental", "post-rock/experimental" to them because they would have no clue what I'm talking about...after knowledge is there, then genres are "shit" because there is no need for them anymore.

I think genres are necesarelly and its purpose is postive: to recognize common patterns and group artists into genres.

Anyway I still think that it sounds very stupid to say: "I listen/play progressive tecno with big influences of hypnnotic ambient and elements of hardcore drum n'bass and atlanta hardcore hip hop"

Music is music, period.

this is true, but in American society, people still think that electronic music is "fake" and not real music, so genres help me, and I'm sure quite a few others to describe exactly what they do...

In most societies American culture is fake.

well, I wouldn't call it fake, but a conglomeration of cultures...if it's so fake, why must everyone immigrate here?

maybe they think that by becoming part of the 'fake' they can relieve themselves of the pressure from the 'real'?

Because there is plenty of money I guess.

I lived in Brooklyn NY for about 1 year and a half and all I can tell about american culture is that it's pretty much like any other culture.

I think everyone likes chill out at some stage. All they got to be is in that mood. Even death metal freaks like to rest their neck muscles occasionally.

No one's mentioned Sigur Ros. They're pretty chill, although probably technically not electronic. (If you wanna get into Sigur Ros try the 4th track on their untitled album - nice).

Air and Zero7 are just amazing also.
