I don't think Chill OUt is actually a new genre. it started probably from mid 90's when trip hop was the hottest shit in town.

Josh is right, it is basically trip hop/electronic lounge/downtempo hip hop with female vocal, etc.

you can check out those compilations from Instinct Records called Trip Hop and Jazz. I have some of those, they are okay.

I agree with you Evilmatik, but here in Italy it's like a new genre 'cause it's hard to find someone who listen it. Now it's a little bit most popular then before...anw....

Hey there, im new here, well join like 20 mins ago actually! but when i read through these posts it just suprises me that everyone is so picky and exact. for example T-Jazz asking about chill-out music, y then does sum1 have to ask for tracks & artists. Chill Out is OBVIOUSLY Music which soothes and chill you out for the morning after, or after a shi**y day.

Having said that I listen to brighter death now to chill out but a lot of people wouldn't call it chill out!

But I know what you're saying!

genres are for dummies:

idm can be chill out, ambient can be chill out, chill out can be idm, chill out can be ambient, trip hop can be chill out, bla, bla, bla

anyway I have a compilation named "chill out or die" from 1997. I have read that it was one of the ultimate "chill out" recordings back then.

it is extremelly good and it features his majesty Pete Namlook as Dreamfish featuring "Hymn" one of the greatest tracks ever made.

right now it's already way too old school, but still a great album.

my advice: go and check

http://www.thegoodlookingorganisation.co.uk/

that is for me the best music to "chill out"

it's less a matter of being exact and specific to certain genres and more about finding a musical reference point...

yeah that makes 2 of us... i don't agree with the way subgenres are broken up to only emcompass 3 or 4 bands (or so it seems)... but i think genres are a valid way of distinguishing varying styles of music (in a broad sense)... chillout/idm/d&b/triphop/ambient... it's all electronic in my mind... punk/emo/grunge/indie/prog/psychdelic?... all rock... but don't tell the indie hipsters that i consider their shining star of musical salvation to be 'just' rock... hehehe

it's like i said earlier... i use the genre title as a broad musical reference point and as such i think genres are valid... if someone wants to read more into the title then that's their prerogrative...

Equinox

To label things is stupid because it denies the unique individual, and unrepeatable nature of all things that surround us. Whether it's people, music, movies...

To label things is good for statistics and for nothing else.

Why do we need to "classify" everything: Jews, Afrodescendants, Indians, Asian, Latins, Drama, Comedy, Rock, Punk, Ska....bullcrap!

EXAMPLE

Autechre are known as the Godfathers od IDM, but Brown and Booth themselves say that what they do now, is not IDM but you will find them as IDM on every weblist or Record Store.

That tells you a lot about how accuratte and useful genres are.

Thanks.
