I'd say it's easily Chris Pennie of the Dillinger Escape Plan (saw him live about a month ago and he was doin' crazy shit. He only played with 1 floor tom (snare 2 crash, ride, splash and a China) Nice wood grain Yamaha (www.dillingerescapeplan.com)
followed closely by Dave Lombardo (saw him with The Phantomas, and he was goin' nuts!) did a solo and at one point he was just doin fills on all of his 9 cymbals...it was just a blur....
Daney Carey is insane...everytime I hear him he makes me wanna play (I'm a drummer)
I also like Gabe Serbian of The Locust (www.thelocust.com)
right now I'm likin'....
-(and even though he's kinda simple, he's solid and creative)-I'd also say Daniel Davison from Norma Jean (www.normajeannoise.com) I've got a DVD of one of their shows, and he's just brutal! Check their site for their video......at the end of the song he picks up his drumkit and thows it against the wall! What's more fu*kin' Metal than that?! .....Pure genius!

I've always thought that Joey Jordison from Slipknot was/is a pretty good drummer too.

my vote goes to sjoerd visch of altar and monolith, simply because he can bust out the blastbeats and double bass, as well as do simpler stuff with the best of 'em. he's also fairly young, which makes it more impressive than someone who's been playing for 20 years.

no offense, but i think lars sucks now just like he sucked back in the 80s.
