Most of the songwriters/artists I listen to these days are still using rhyme in their lyrics (Dave Matthews, Ben Folds, Sting, U2, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah McLachlan, Phish, David Wilcox, among others). Rhymes do not get in the way of a good lyric if the songwriter is doing his/her job right (that means crafting, not just settling on the first thing that pops in one's head). Also, what really makes the difference in whether a lyric has power and passion isn't about the rhymes at all--it's about what's in between the rhymes.
