Well,
A good example would be a pre-amp on a guitar amplifier. It takes a very weak signal from a guitar pick-up/s and boosts that signal so it can be filtered with the tone controls (or EQs) and then amplified with the power AMP. By turning up the boost level you get natural distortion/overdrive.
Similar principle applies to Microphone/instrument pre-amps (often featured on some good audio mixers).
Nowadays, some pre-amps feature utilities like Compressor/Limiter, Gate etc.
I personally use a Roland MMP-2 pre-amp modeler. It models some good old tube pre-amps and even different microphones.
