Haha! OK. I think it's cool that you tried them out. I've never heard that Hong Kong one, but Police and Thieves is a classic. If you don't like that, Jamaican music is definitely not your thing. Before you give up on it entirely, check out that Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions CD I mentioned. If you don't like it, well then, I guess there's nothing more I can suggest. Thanks for being open-minded though.

i'm not huge on typical raggae stuff... i like it with a twist... i'm not really into the message either i just like the sounds heheh...
this is pretty much directed to horakhti but if anyone else can suggest similar stuff i'd be happy.. i'm basically looking for stuff like big sugar's 'tobacco hand' or raggadeath's 'ambient bollocks'... they aren't quite traditional but like i said i'm not huge on the traditional...

I can't say I've heard of either of those albums you mentioned, so I can't really make any recommendations.
It's starting to seem like I'm one of the very, very few people on this forum that likes Jamaican music...

Wait, what are you looking for? The top 10 or 15 albums or songs? Because I already gave you the top albums. If you want songs, you'll have to give me a little while. In the meantime, almost anything off of "The Harder They Come, The Harder They Fall" soundtrack is good.

Yah mon, me weed dealer be playin' da natty dread tunes and we be smokin' to 'dem. Reggae make da ganja go down nice 'n irie. Ah don' even 'member da last time I be sober no more, me always high on da weed.
Yeah...
I can't really say, it's just a type of music that I've always liked. I started off with a few CD's, like that compilation I told you about and another one called "The Story of Jamaican Music". And of course I've always been into Marley. From there I just started to explore more Jamaican music more. I ended up amassing a pretty good collection and developed a decent base of knowledge about it. Standard story. I'm neither a hippy nor a Rastafarian-wannabe, if that's what you're thinking. You don't have to fit into a stereotype to like this music.
Here are some classic songs from "The Harder They Come" soundtrack:
The Maytals "Pressure Drop"
The Maytals "Sweet and Dandy"
Desmond Dekker "007 (Shanty Town)"
Jimmy Cliff "You Can Get It If You Really Want"
Jimmy Cliff "The Harder They Come"
Slickers "Johnny Too Bad"
And here are a few classic cuts from "The Story of Jamaican Music" (includes ska, rocksteady and dancehall):
The Maytals "54-46 That's My Number"
Max Romeo "Wet Dream"
Max Romeo "War Ina Babylon"
The Wailers "Simmer Down"
Justin Hinds & the Dominoes "Carry Go Bring Come"
The Ethiopians "Reggae Hit the Town"
Niney "Blood & Fire"
The Mighty Diamonds "Right Time"
Culture "Two Sevens Clash"
Junior Murvin "Police & Thieves"
Althia & Donna "Uptown Top Ranking"
Tenor Saw "Ring the Alarm"
Wayne Smith "Under Me Sleng Teng"
Shabba Ranks "Wicked Inna Bed"
Download some of those and let me know what you think.

I've downloaded some Lee Scratch Perry songs I like (certainly I Am The Madman is top), Max Romeo is also quite good (Prodigy used Chase The Devil in a song of theirs right?).
And The Specials are English but they play sort of the same style and I like them even better!

Glad you liked them. I don't think I've heard that Prodigy song - which one is it? I've got "Music for the Jilted Generation" and "The Fat of the Land" - is it on one of those, or some other recording?
Yeah, I LOOOVE The Specials, English Beat, The Selecter, etc. I didn't include them in my "Jamaican" threads 'cause, like you said, they're English. Plus, they're kind of a mixture of ska and punk, so it's not pure Jamaican-style music. But I hear ya, I've got a big 2-Tone fetish.
