i agree, but in order to "describe" music, genres are probably the only way you can...

"This guy takes a guitar and feeds the sounds through a sampler, and then through his computer"...

What would you call that? um...Rock Computer!

Genres aren't as hard as most people make them out to be. It basicly just takes the ablity to distingish the feelings/attitudes of the music, and its common traits.

IE: Dark Sanctuary uses alot of synths, classical instruments, and female vocals. And is generally depressing. So, Dark Sanctuary would be considered Darkwave.

Brighter Death Now, uses a lot of effects/filters, distortion, sound samples and other various sounds. To make very dark, desolate feeling. Or sometimes, angry, hateful, sad, ect.

I really don't get why so many people have a problem with classing music... Genres are not a religion, or an insult, its simply a discriptive tool.

IE(again): Say I was to go and discribe the music of a personal favorite band of mine, Rakoth. Instead of going off and discribing every inch of their music (Fast guitars, clean/growling-screaming vocals, flutes, pianos, ect, ect.), one can just say, "Black Metal with flutes, painos, and some melodic vocals."

And people will have a pretty damn good idea of what I am talking about. More baisc idea granted, but its much quicker than an entire paragraph, isn't it? And that, is the point of genres.

Aye, that was my longest post in along time.

Darkwave is a stupid term to begin with. It's tagged onto just about everything, and it gets confusing after a while.
Gothic Rock act Braindance, darker industrial/ebm acts like Claire Voyant and Sophya get tagged with it, and so do industrial rock acts like Dead Inside the Chrysalis. Fortunetly, I'm not really into any of these bands or sub-genres, so I generally get to avoid this confusion.

As for dark ambient acts, I own an album by Mondblut. I like it, but that's all I can tell you about it. I'd also offer Forma4 as a suggestion. Even though it isn't very dark, or ambient.. it has a similar and indescibable vibe to it.
