Syd Barrett was the main brains behind everything in Pink Floyd....he stilll had a massive influence onwards to Dark Side of the Moon and Wish you were here (as that was dedicated to him). I will ALWAYS prefer Syd to any of the members and I do prefer more earlier albums......

I adore alot of SYds solo stuff, anyone else got any of his albums?

Does anyone know where I can get any stuff on a band he made in Cambridge called 'Stars'??? I think that is what the band was called....?

But I still love Gilmour (I think he was the better guitarist in the fact he taught Barrett) and Waters had some great influence in more of a political way and brilliant vocals.

I feel Gilmour and Wright's vocals were what "made" that very cool spacey Pink Floyd sound that most love... Waters vocals are good (more raw and rougher), but are not nearly as smooth as the others (and the early sound was Syd on lead vocals on most cuts and I prefer his vocals over Waters as well)...

Lyrically is where Water's really shines...

This is so untrue, I'm not going to type the essay that I just typed in the other Floyd thread.
He started the band so yeah he was important, he played on one and a half albums. Yeah saucerful of secrets was heavily influenced by the Barret Style but dude it pretty much ends there.
How was Barret the brains behind Meddle? or Animals? so the final cut was a Barret Project was it ?? Roger didn't influece it ???

DSOTM was not written about Syd.
Shine on you carzy diamond was, and that is it.

Yes Syds solo stuff is good, Madcap Laughs was heeps better than Barret, I do love piper at the gates and the Barret Stuff on Relics, which is just early singles. He was the brains in piper but that is it, the rest was all Dave, Roger, Rick and Nick's brains.

Is that right, did Gilmour teach Barrett?

Sort of,
Barret got his first guitar at the age of 12 and so could play when he met Dave.

However Dave taught Syd quite a few things while they were in Cambridge together.
Dave was using an echo box long before Syd and also taught syd How to use a slide.
Dave used to teach Syd stones riffs evry lunch time for a year when they were both a technical college.

I know many people have their preference of what 'era' of Pink Floyd they love, but Syd didn't serve as any more than an inspiration for later work.

I think he does get abit more credit for maybe the later work....

but I guess in some ways the later work wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Syd I guess.

As far as I know he did have a massive influence of 'Dark side of the moon' though. I will have to dig out an old book about loads of stuff with it.... I know it wasn't written about him. But I guess you can always wonder about the schizophrenic elements in brain damage. But as far as I know waters declined it was.

but I adore 'The wall' and 'Animals' (some of the best acoustic ever) afterwards. Which showed even more of the social injustices of modern society and the atrocities of war in a way that no other band has done before or since.

On what way did he have amassive influence??

When the band say Sid, during the recording of wish you were here, they had not seen him for many many years.

Roger wrote the lyrics to Dark Side. He was writing a concept album of sorts regarding all of the things in life which drove people mad. One of them was not LSD which was the main contributer to Syds madness.

I guess seeing syd loose the plot could have provided the interest for Roger to explore these issues but surely that could not be considered a massive influence.

Hmmmmm all interesting stuff.......Blackangel is right, if you listen to the lyrics of stuff on Dark Side and mainly Wish You Were Here. Syd Barret is the inspiration behind most of the songs. Anyways I don't have a fave Pink Floyd member. In terms of albums, I think that Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell don't get enough respect, because they are both amazing albums. Here is my top 7 Albums. Why 7? Cause its lucky....

1) Wish You Were Here (because everything song is amazing)
2) The Wall
3) Dark Side of the Moon
4) Division Bell
5) Momentary Lapse of Reason
6) Animals
7) Meddle

There ya go......have a nice day

That could be true, but if it is the band deny it.

It is interesting that you rate the division bell so highly.
Maybe I should listen to it a bit more, I have always rated it pretty low on the floydian scale.
