Converting file (suffix .mpe)

I'm stuck with some .mpe files which will play in Windows Media Player but nowhere else. I'd like to convert these files to a more generally accepted format.

Can anyone help me?

I'm not even sure precisely what an .mpe file is. It seems very esoteric and I'd be willing to try a solution for any computing platform.

Thanks a million,

Nathan
