What's really incredible about Monk is that his playing style remained essentially unchanged from his first recordings in the 1940s to the end of his career...he was so advanced, he saw no reason to change or even attempt to improve!

"In fact, one of the more remarkable aspects of Monk's music was that it was fully formed by 1947 and he saw no need to alter his playing or compositional style in the slightest during the next 25 years." -allmusic.com

Shit, that's kind of scary...I honestly don't think I've ever read their review of Monk...

I have decided to post my Thelonious Monk collection so far, due to sheer boredom:

"Straight, No Chaser"
"Thelonious Himself"
Complete Blue Note Recordings
"The Genius of Modern Music"
Volumes 1 and 2

I can add "Monk's Dream" now. I love this stuff!

How is his album with John Coltrane by the way?

Is that a trick question?

I take it you haven't seen this thread.

Otherwise, I want to make sure I understand the question. Are you actually asking how good any Monk recording happens to be, especially any Monk and Coltrane recordings?

Coltrane has recorded on more than one Monk recording.

Monk's Music - essential Monk.

Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane - the Father of the Tenor, Coleman Hawkins also is on two tracks. Essential is an understatement.

Thelonious Himself - essential solo monk with one track with Coltrane.

There is also this one, which has great music but was recorded by Coltrane's first wife. I think she had the mike in her purse.

It's the only known recording of Monk & Coltrane's 6 month stand at the Five Spot Cafe. For 6 months they ruled NYC. Even the other great musicians who where either in town or arriving into town whould go and see them performing.

I would normally just tell you to get the Riverside box, but I know money is an issue, and they are slowly remastering all of the recordings, which make up the box.
